2016 also brought the release of Cannots, a collaborative work between Walker and Chicago free jazz drummer Charles Rumback that was released in limited-vinyl quantities for that year's Record Store Day festivities. Inspired in part by the Windy City and local musical heroes Tortoise and Gastr del Sol, the eight-track album, Golden Sings That Have Been Sung, was released in August 2016. After nearly ten months of touring Primrose Green, Walker returned to Chicago and set about writing and recording his third album. Musically, it blurs the lines between folk, rock, jazz, and new music. It was the first of his recordings to feature his own vocals. Recording in Chicago with a cast of improvisational and jazz session aces (including cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm and vibraphonist Jason Adasiewicz), Walker completed Primrose Green, issued in 2015. His debut album, All Kinds of You, was issued by the label in April of 2014.Īfter intensive touring and playing on others' records, he signed to Dead Oceans in the fall. Walker's first widely circulated recording was a vinyl-only three-song 12" entitled West Wind from Tompkins Square Records in 2013. Later that year he released - again via cassette on Plustapes - Of Deathly Premonitions, a four-song collaboration with fellow fingerstyle guitarist Daniel Bachman. Its artwork was deliberately reminiscent of John Fahey's Death Chants Breakdowns & Military Favorites, and inspired by the American Primitive lexicon of Takoma Records. The first recorded aspect of his complex musical persona arrived with the cassette-only EP The Evidence of Things Unseen, issued in a limited edition by Plustapes in 2011. For his part, Walker proved delightfully unpredictable, shapeshifting styles from blues and folk to pop and experimental sounds. A series of adventurous collaborations followed before Walker returned to original solo work on 2021's Course in Fable.Īfter spending a few years cutting his teeth on the Chicago indie and experimental music scenes, Walker began giving solo live performances on acoustic guitar, drawing the inevitable comparisons to his peers, from William Tyler and Glenn Jones to British Isles guitarists ranging from John Renbourn to Davy Graham and Martin Carthy. Walker's love of the DMB was highlighted in his dark interpretations of their songs on the 2018 covers album The Lillywhite Sessions. He moved from noisy avant-garde work in his nascent stages into virtuosic guitar playing and floating spiritual pop that traced lines between Bert Jansch, Van Morrison, and somehow even the Dave Matthews Band. Ryley Walker is an accomplished fingerstyle guitarist, singer, and songwriter from Chicago whose music and evolution as an artist have proven mercurial.

Training The 5th elder is first introduced when she (along with the 7th Elder, Zarga Siriana, and the 8th Elder) arrive in the city and meet with the director of the KSA in order to warn them about the impending battle that would take place, so that the KSA could take the necessary measures to quickly and effectively respond and contain the damage. She is first introduced in the series when she is sent along with 7th and 8th Elders to punish the ones responsible for Rostere and Muar's deaths as well as start the war against Lukedonia by attacking their hierarchy. She appears to have lived for quite a long period of time as well, due to her knowledge of Frankenstein from over 800 years before the series started. Her history with the Union is not entirely disclosed yet, but her rank suggests that she is a senior and powerful member of the Union, as well as of the werewolf race. In order to protect Kentas and to stop the atrocities carried out by their clan, she didn't hesitate to seek out Muzaka. She and Kentas believe that the role of a Warrior is to protect their race and not to sacrifice them for the sake of power. Unlike the majority of the werewolves, she and her friend, Kentas, rejected any modification to their bodies and just rely on their natural power and strength. Although she is aware that Muzaka is deemed by their tribe as a traitor, she felt sadness by this revelation. However, despite her personality, Lunark had shown a compassionate side. Her sense of honour and pride is sometimes in conflict with her goal-driven actions. She's shown to truly enjoy the thrill of battle if her opponent is strong enough and expresses deep anger at anybody trying to interrupt her. Lunark is typically a very cynical person. In this state, she also grows fangs and claws. When Lunark fully transforms into her werewolf form and releases her power, her hair becomes much longer and her entire body becomes covered in light greyish-brown fur. She wears the standard white and gold hooded robes of a Union Elder. She has light brown hair that extends past her shoulders. It wasn't a complete pack, but just the launcher component that could be used to build platform-specific packs. This launcher was never finished and so never achieved wide usage, however some early Mac and Linux packs were available based on this version. In 2012 Dricus created a Java-based launcher, which was cross platform and more flexible, but also required manual configuration. NET 3.5, and for several years this meant that the LNP was only available for Windows systems. The original launcher was built with Visual Basic and. It became the key component of the pack, which allows easy configuration of the DF installation, choose graphics packs, launching of utilities, and provided one click toggling of settings instead of editing configuration files by hand. On DecemLucasUP released the first version of the Lazy Newb Pack that contained the graphical interface launcher that is well known today. They included the utilities DFHack, Dwarf Foreman, Dwarf Therapist, PerfectWorldDF, Quickfort, Runesmith, Stonesense. The first versions of the LNP included a text-based interface (seen on the right) that only permitted the user to enable/disable aquifers and choose from the Phoebus, Mayday, and Ironhand graphics packs. The LNP distinguished itself by providing an interface for changing common DF settings, instead of editing the raw text files included with the game. Other notable packs from this era are Phoebus graphics and Mayday's Graphic Set. Before the LNP, it was becoming common for the community to bundle up their own distributions of Dwarf Fortress with tile sets, graphics, and mods to make them more accessible to players. The first pack with the name Lazy Newb Pack (LNP) was created by LucasUP for Windows and DF version 0.31.12 and posted in the bay12forums on June 11, 2010. It may however be interesting to look back at how the LNP/Starter Pack movement evolved. This section is provided for information, and should not be interpreted as a recommendation for these packs. Eventually, someone new steps up and releases their own pack. Maintaining a pack is a lot of work, and over the years, people inevitably lose time or motivation to update their packs. This pack is maintained by PeridexisErrant, and aims to include everything - while ensuring that ignoring any option still works for new players. Windows: PeridexisErrant's DF Starter Pack There are several packs available for different platforms, with different maintainers and release schedules. Of course there are a few personal touches too, but the vast majority of each is thanks to others - and not least Tarn and Zach for Dwarf Fortress itself. It is also important to note that most of the contents of each pack were created by many members of the community and just collected, configured, and redistributed by the maintainer of each pack. Most include just about everything that still works and could be useful. The packages are built around the idea that newbies will likely have more difficulty with the game than with a package of utilities - which often make the game easier - and that there are many players who are not new but would still prefer an option to get all the extras in one place with a minimum of fiddling. In general, it's safe to simply ignore any option you don't understand and trust that the default settings will be okay. 3.4 PyLNP: The modern cross platform launcherĪ Starter pack (sometimes referred to as a "Lazy Newb Pack") is a pack that includes many utilities that a veteran player might want, while configuring everything in such a way that it is still easier for new players. 2.1 Windows: PeridexisErrant's DF Starter Pack. I recommend gluing the tabs in place with glue sticks rather than taping with scotch tape. Folding the paper into shape should be relatively straightforward - just make sure the imagery is on the outside and the tabs are on the inside. As usual, I recommend printing the designs onto card stock, and scoring the fold lines with a dull edge of some kind before cutting out the shapes to help make crisp folds. In all of the downloads presented here, the cut lines are thick and black, and the fold lines are thin and gray. For most of the following downloads, I have created both dodecahedral and icosahedral versions. This is one of those issues where I expect different people will have different preferences. The dodecahedron is the most bothersome to make, but it gives broad maps to study, and the poles are flat, which I like visually, and it also allows you to rest the globe in a straight up-and-down position. It’s too easy to focus on the shape rather than the map. But the poles are pointy, and I find all those faces and edges to be a little distracting to the eye. The icosahedron is fairly easy to make, and it resembles a sphere better than the others. My favorite shape for a polyhedral globe is a toss-up between the dodecahedron and the icosahedron. I found that the cube is actually not quite as goofy as I thought it would be - it gives you broad uninterrupted flat maps to study, and still keeps all the parts of the world in relatively good relative arrangement. The cube and the octahedron don’t resemble a sphere very well, but I thought I’d try making globes out of them all just for fun and for comparison. It's not too hard to create a design on paper to cut out and fold into a polyhedron, and with a little fancy math and a good source image, it's possible to draw maps on these polygonal faces, so that they make a globe when you fold them into shape.įour of the simplest polyhedra are the cube, the octahedron, the dodecahedron, and the icosahedron. In other words, we could model a sphere as a polyhedron. Another strategy would be to cut and fold a piece of paper into a shape that resembles a sphere, but is made up of lots of small flat surfaces instead of one big curved surface. Some time back, I worked out a way to make paper hemispheres, as you can see in my paper celestial spheres, but these have their pros and cons. The “celestial sphere” of stars, the globes of the earth and moon, maps of the earth at various times and in various conditions - it could be such a fun and useful activity to be able to work with paper models of all these things. I’ve wanted for a long time to create ways to make spheres out of paper. There are also templates for blank polyhedra. Printable paper polyhedra, for kids to cut and fold into globes of the Earth, the Moon, and Mars. Remove to a cutting board, and allow the steak to rest for 5-10 minutes, underneath an aluminum foil tent to retain heat.
